Wang Yung-An, active in Taipei and Montréal, holds a BFA from the National Taiwan University of Arts and an MS from the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at National Central University. Driven by a haptic-first inquiry, she uses her self-developed Mind-Skin Code to navigate the emergence of interoceptive matter, rebalancing perception across human and non-human environments. Her creative propositions take “the haptic of seeing” and ask how skin might think, sensing the world as frequency and contact.
Having worked with touch/haptic as affect material in creative practice and developed neurotech protocols in a start-up, her practice interrogates the bisection of modern human perception into a “computational brain” and a “residual body,” thereby questioning the relationship between humans and intelligent agents. Mind-Skin Code records and scores touch so that it can pass between bodies. What it asks is whether contact can be shared, not what contact is. Treating skin as a view-window, she works with vibration as a way for bodies to reach one another.
She is currently enrolled in a Rehabilitation Science PhD at McGill to deepen her research-creation practice in the cultural and social aspects of touch, introducing the participatory workshop Mind-Skin Code to the academic ecosystem while sharpening her creation reflectivity. Through this research-creation she is building “skinhood”: a selfhood that forms at and through the skin, made in the workshop, held in the notation, and living in the connection between bodies.
