Cristóbal F. Barria Bignotti (Santiago de Chile, 1984) holds a PhD in Art History from Sapienza Università di Roma (2019). He is interested in studying the modes by which images participate in the organization of our sensorial experiences. His research covers a wide range of subjects, including the political connotations with which Gustave Courbet’s painting imbues our tactile experiences, and the anti-colonialist role conferred on the sense of touch within Latin American art and criticism. From 2017 to 2018, he was head of a study group in Latin American art at the Istituto Italo-Latinoamericano in Rome (IILA). He edits the journal Quaderni Culturali IILA (2019) for the same institution. Other distinguished publications include the articles “Clement Greenberg’s Media Differentiation and Gustave Courbet’s Tactile Appeal” (2019), and “Due Momenti Della Critica d’Arte Latinoamericana del Novecento” (2017). Cristóbal has written the exhibition catalogues “Carsten Holler a Global Artist; Carsten Holler a Local Artist” (2015) and “Two Architectures for Researching” (2016), as well as the chapters “From the Laboratory Image to the Habitat-Image” for the book “Laboratorio Eigengrau” (2016) by the artist J. Toro and “No tocar” for the book “Echoes” (2020) by the artist Marion Tampon.
